Election Process

School Council holds an election every fall for its members. The election is announced in the principal’s school-wide bulletin. All parents and caregivers of a student enrolled in Northern are eligible to nominate themselves for membership. If you are interested, please complete the self-nomiation form below. Questions about the election can be sent to nss.school.council@gmail.com.

Nominations must be received by October 3rd.

School Council is made of 15 parent members, 1 teacher rep, 1 staff rep, 1 student rep, and 1 community member. The principal is in an advisory role and does not vote.

To become a Parent Member:

  1. Parents who are interested in becoming a voting parent member (“candidates”) should fill out the self-nomination form.
  2. If there are 15 or less candidates, all applicants will automatically become the new School Council.
  3. If there are more than 15 candidates, an election will be held. At the election, each parent will have a minute to introduce themselves. Then, there will be a vote by all parents present, and the top 15 candidates will become the new School Council.

Run for Leadership (Co-Chair, Co-Secretary, Co-Treasurer):

  1. After School Council has elected its members, each candidate interested in leadership will be given 1 minute to describe their interest in the position and what they’d like to contribute.
  2. If there are no more than 2 candidates for each position, they will automatically fill the position.
  3. If there are more than 2 candidates for a position, the 15 Parent Members will fill the position by voting.
