To become a Parent Member or Leader:
1) Parents who are interested in becoming a voting parent member (“candidates”) should fill out the self-nomination form above.
2) If there are 15 or less candidates, all applicants will automatically become the new School Council.
3) If there are more than 15 candidates, each parent will have a minute to introduce themselves. Then, there will be a vote by all parents present, and the top 15 candidates will become the new School Council.
Run for Leadership (Co-Chair, Co-Secretary, Co-Treasurer):
1) After School Council has elected its members, each candidate interested in leadership will be given 1 minute to describe their interest in the position and what they’d like to contribute.
2) If there are no more than 2 candidates for each position, they will automatically fill the position.
3) If there are more than 2 candidates for a position, the 15 Parent Members will fill the position by voting.
Roles & Responsibilites
Parent Member
Parent members are voting members who: participate on any committees established by the school council; contribute to the discussions of the school council; solicit the views of other parents and members of the community to share with the school council; observe the council’s code of ethics and established bylaws.
Co-Chair
The co-chairs are elected by the council members and must be parents/guardians. The co-chairs are voting members who, in addition to performing the same duties as other council members, arrange for meetings, prepare agendas, chair council meetings, ensure that minutes of council meetings are recorded and maintained, facilitate the resolution of conflict, participate as ex-officio members of all committees established by the school council; communicate with the school principal on behalf of the council; being a co-signer on the council’s bank account.
Co-Treasure
The co-treasurers are elected by the council members and must be a parent/ guardian. The co-treasurers are voting members who, in addition to performing the same duties as other council members, are responsible for the financial recording and reporting required by the Board; preparing the draft and final budgets for approval by the council; preparing and presenting updated financial information at all meetings; being a cosigner on the council’s bank account.
Co-Secretary
The co-secretaries are elected by the council members and must be a parent/guardian. The co-secretaries are voting members who, in addition to performing the same duties as other council members, are responsible for preparing draft and final minutes of all Council meetings; ensuring that these and all other documents for discussion in meetings are uploaded onto the website; managing communications for Council in our email box.
Student Rep
is a voting member who: contributes to the discussions of the school council; solicits the views of other students to share with the school council; may participate on any committees established by the school council; communicates information from the council to other students; observes the council’s code of ethics and established bylaws.
Teacher Rep
One voting member who: contributes to the discussions of the school council; solicits views from teachers to share with the school council; may participate on any committees established by the school council; communicates information back to teachers; observes the council’s code of ethics and established bylaws.
Staff Rep
One voting member who: contributes to the discussions of the school council; solicits views from non-teachinq staff to share with the school council; may participate on any committees established by the school council; communicates information back to non-teaching staff; observes the council’s code of ethics and established bylaws.
Community Rep
One voting member who: provides information or perspectives to council related to an external organization or community; may participate on any committee established by school council; communicates information back to the committee that they represent; observes the council’s code of ethics and established bylaws.
Principal
The Principal does not vote but must attend all meetings of School Council (VP may attend in lieu) and has broad responsibilities summarized in section 5.6 of the Guide for School Councils
